Kate’s a Christian herself, but she’s always found the teachings of the prosperity gospel antithetical to her own open-hearted, empathic, and accepting form of Christianity. If you have stage four colon cancer, the thinking goes, then it’s your fault. If you’re poor, or sad, or sick, the thinking goes, your faith must be lacking. If God rewards those who have faith in Him, then those who suffer must have brought it upon themselves. This sounds simple enough, but scratch the surface of this superficially uplifting ideology and you’ll find a more sinister subtext. The prosperity gospel teaches that if you serve God faithfully, you’ll reap the rewards: health, wealth, and happiness. They’re all Christian best-sellers, and they’re mostly written by those who preach the prosperity gospel. But if we take a look at the books she’s pulled from the shelves, it all starts to come into focus. The reason she’s causing a scene in the hospital gift shop isn’t so immediately apparent. Despite her young age and her – until now – good health, Kate is living on borrowed time. And even that word, survival, is a bit of a misnomer of the fourteen percent who do “survive,” most only live another two years. The survival rate for this scenario is hardly promising, at 14 percent. Her colon is riddled with tumors that have spread to her liver. And it’s a particularly horrible form of cancer: Kate has stage four colon cancer. After suffering through months of unexplained abdominal pain, nausea, and dramatic weight loss, Kate has at long last been diagnosed – with cancer. The reason Kate is in the hospital is written clearly on her chart. So why is Kate Bowler standing in the gift shop of a North Carolina hospital, wearing a baggy cotton hospital gown and trailing her IV drip behind her, surrounded by a pile of books she has plucked from the shop’s shelves? And why is she, in no uncertain terms, telling the nonplussed teenage shop assistant that these books are inappropriate – no, outright offensive – reading material for a hospital gift shop? Think tasteful potted plants, greeting cards with euphemistic messages about “recovery,” and books of the uplifting, spiritual variety. why pain doesn’t need to be framed as a learning experience.Īs a rule, hospital gift shops are stocked with scrupulously inoffensive wares.the reason you should consider not making a bucket list and.what the prosperity gospel and Peloton have in common.Critical as she was of the concept of “best life,” Kate was now faced with an urgent question: How could she best spend the life she had left? But she’d never imagined it might feel so finite, so soon. Kate always knew her time on earth was finite. She was happily married to her childhood sweetheart, mother to a much-loved toddler, Zach, and enjoying professional success in a competitive field.Īnd then Kate was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Ironically enough, at the age of thirty-five Kate really was living her best life. Kate Bowler knew better than most that there’s no quick fix to the pain and messiness that comes from the simple fact of being human.Īs a professor, she’d written books critiquing self-help gurus and evangelicals who insisted you could pray your way to your “best life.” In fact, she was absolutely certain the contemporary concept of “living your best life” was toxic and shallow.

The Liquid set is different from the Studio set for the most part. The smart-sounds that come with Liquid and Studio - if you have any of those disks around still - can be loaded into SonicFire Pro - but they aren't mood music tracks. I usually rate each track - if more than half of them are 'ratable, I buy the disc on offer.ĥ. However, disk offers are very frequent - watch for them (get on the mailing list) and pick those you think will be of use to you. Single tracks work out expensive (about $19 each) compared with a complete disk of ten tracks ($99 at full price). That's where the tracks go - there are other folders and files associated with these.Ĥ. You should have a mix of single and triple line (mood) tracksģ. I believe the Core disk that comes with SFPro has only 10 tracks, so if you're seeing 20, this is most likely to be the Liquid tracks: if they have the single parallel line, than they are definitely not the Core disc tracks, so that would need (re) installing. Email SmartSound with the query, and you will get the definitive answer fairly quicklyĢ. Uninstalling and re-installing it probably won't cure that - I had a similar problem some time ago and cannot remember the exact cure - which was to delete a data file and let SFPro recreate it (a bit like the Studio and Liquid RTFX and HFX when they go wrong). This sounds like SFPro has become corrupt. One of the things you may need to do is have SFPro search your drives for all SmartSound tracks - it is one of the options available from the SFPro menus (not got that machine on at the moment - but you'll find it).ġ. One way or the other it will help clear things up! Tell me if I am wrong about the Liquid/MC SonicFirePro conflict theory. This can be easily disproved by anyone who is still using Liquid and who has installed SonicFirePro along with MC as well.Ĭome on Liquid users. I still think it could be the fact that you have probably 2 places on your system where files are being stored. But as far as I can make out, that is the situation.įinally, as the why you are getting the error - I don't know. Hopefully I am not telling a lot of "untruths". If you look at the icon to the left of the track names:ġ gray dash means that the track is single layer and you don't have it installed.ģ gray dashes mean that it is a multi-layer track and you don't have it installedĪ gray rectangle with 1 or 3 dashes means the same as above (I think)Ī blue rectangle with an orange dash means it is a single layer track and it is installed.Ī blue rectangle with 3 orange dashes means it is multi-layer and you do have it installed. I don't think that there are any sound effects included on the install discs that are provided. If that is what is happening, I think your Liquid tracks will be saved in another folder that will make them available in your latest installed SonicFirePro.īut I may be completely wrong about the above guess.Ĥ. So you would have to try the "import" path that you are finding. Then when you open SonicFire Pro it scans your system and finds those files. It is possible that your Liquid installed tracks are in a special Liquid folder. So there is definitely something wrong with your set-up/installation.Ĭheck your Tools/ Options/ Internet folder and see if "Automatically download previews" is checked.Īlso, if you get annoyed by the startup music when you open SonicFire Pro, you can turn it off under the General tab in the same menu.ģ. So i am assuming that the SCART/Phono Adapter with the DAC convertor is the way to achieve this as well as getting the settings configured correctly for outputs. I Just want to utilise the Speakers connected to it for Audio. The DAV-DZ230 does not have HDMI ARC and it is an old system i got it in 2008. Hi Guys, thanks for your contributions so far to my issue, I agree, I've never heard any suggestion that such an old unit has ARC - and I've connected MANY from that era to numerous TV's - in fact we used to carry SCART to phono adaptors, and 3.5mm jack to phono leads, on the van for that very reason. I can't find any mention of HDMI ARC though in the manual. It does have HDMI Control (HDMI CEC), and there's also a setting to enable/disable sound from the DAV-DZ230 going to the TV via the HDMI connection. I thought the DAV-DZ230 was quite an old system - 2007-ish? That predates HDMI ARC by at least five or six years, surely? Assuming the new LG TV has ARC on at least one HDMI socket that provides sound out from the TV and DVD picture into it. The DAV-DZ230 has Audio Return Channel on its HDMI connection. The switchable SCART adapters are widely available too. Instead of a mains plug power lead they come with a USB to power plug lead. There are versions available that can be powered from one of the spare USB ports on the TV. We're often asked if this can be done with an adapter cable. On the Optical convertors, they turn a light signal in to something electrical. The final part is setting the IN / OUT switch to the correct setting. You should now have a signal flowing from the optical via the converter to the SCART adapter. Next, go to the TV and set the audio out menu (for optical is separate from the HDMI setting) to Stereo PCM or just PCM - it's the same thing as far as optical is concerned. Once you have everything hooked up, plugged in and powered up, put the DAV-DZ230 on to the TV Audio setting. As well as the adapter and convertor you'll need some cables: An optical and a stereo RCA to stereo RCA lead. Then connect that to an Optical to analogue stereo convertor ( example here), then connect the red and the white RCA phono sockets to a switchable SCART adapter ( example here). What you need to use is Optical on the TV. Thanks folks, hopefully this is clear and detailed enough to get a possible solution. I'm thinking there is an easy fix here that I'm missing? If I change the Sony amplifier to Tuner FM/AM, then that audio will play through the surround sound no problem. When I first set the TV up I set it up using cable, not a set top box or satellite. When I connect the component cable to the TV it acknowledges it by showing "AV x3" on the screen. I've tried changing the sound output settings on the LG with no luck. I've tried using a SCART to composite but I can't get any audio whatsoever. The old TV had a SCART connection, so connecting the amplifier to it and having surround sound through DTV was simple (just using SCART-SCART).Īlthough, this newer LGUJ63 doesn't have a SCART input, only HDMI and component. I've just replaced an old LG plasma screen with a new LGUJ63. The connections on the back of this amplifier are HDMI (for DVD only) and SCART. I have an old Sony surround sound system/DVD player. Tacoma wants to be about solidarity, but in doing so it glosses over the importance of identity within that solidarity. It could be argued that this is just an extension of the ways the companies within Tacoma have ceased to see their workers as human, but it feels like a more explicit sidestepping of the issues surrounding capitalism and race/gender/sexual orientation/nationality/body type, etc. Here is a notably diverse crew locked in an abusive economic system, and yet they are recognized only as crew members, each with a role to play but otherwise indistinct. In some ways, it almost feels like an accidental erasure of the diversity Fullbright went through the effort to create. Though it is believable that some tensions surrounding identity politics might disappear in the future, it seems unlikely given our history and current trajectory that these aspects would cease entirely to affect an individual’s relationship to an oppressive system. But I am not sure Tacoma is the right game for these stories. It is exhausting even as a white, able-bodied, cis man for there to be no place of peace where marginalized groups can exist and experience stories that are not only about oppression. It is important and necessary that we have games featuring a diverse cast of characters where those differences do not need to define them. And I’m torn about whether this is good or negligent. Capitalism has historically hit marginalized groups the hardest so it is curious that in the future Tacoma imagines, true equality has actually been reached. But as visible as these differences are, they don’t manifest themselves in the game’s themes of capitalist marginalization. The crew of the Tacoma is laudably diverse, featuring a range of genders, sexual orientations, nationalities, body types, and religions. Tacoma readily reflects the dehumanizing results of nation-sized capitalist companies, but curiously, tensions between individuals have all but vanished. In their video essay on Tacoma, Errant Signal noted even the design of the space station itself reflected the company’s inability to see its workers as individuals, with cabins designed as “one-size fit all” with no expectation of married couples or different body types. It is easy to see a station like the Tacoma existing not decades in the future, but years or even today if lawmakers would allow it. It is invasive and inescapable in a way that feels eerily familiar, with contemporary discussions of privacy questioning what constitutes digital consent to be monitored, and monoliths like Amazon being accused of forcing their workers to piss in buckets rather than stop production. Crew members attempting to go back to school are told they cannot do so outside the company network, and the company’s demand for total control and knowledge goes as far as to record crew member’s showering or getting cozy with their crewmates. As you rewind augmented reality recordings of the Tacoma’s crew, you witness tense conversations with separated families and couples who cannot guarantee they won’t be stationed apart. Tacoma goes all in on this theme of economic entrapment. Paralleling these changes are exponential advances in artificial intelligence which now threatens to render “obsolete” the few remaining human workers, if legislation is passed to remove the requirement of human oversight. Global currencies have collapsed and been replaced by company loyalty points locked to whichever mega-corporation a worker is indentured to. Tacoma is set in the 2080s aboard a space station of the same name. To borrow from father Marx, “there are no happy endings under capitalism.” Unions and activists groups can change the world, it is not just a matter of working together that is needed for these systems to change. But with Tacoma, it begins to feel like this optimism might be getting in the way of the message that actually needs to be heard. We need more games that champion our collective humanity and the importance of relationships. Gone Home and Tacoma let their characters live, in spite of all odds and precedents, and that is something to be happy about. Tacoma similarly sets itself up as a futuristic warning to the human price of capitalism à la Alien but resolves by pronouncing the strength of worker solidarity and grassroots activism. With Gone Home, they took the all too familiar story of a queer teenager driven to suicide from lack of acceptance and turned it into an ode to reckless love. If the title was not obvious enough, the following will contain full spoilers for Fullbright’s Tacoma, as well as the film Sorry to Bother You.įullbright is one of gaming’s most optimistic game developers.
